This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: SILVERS MARINE GOVERNOR. The ordinary ball-goveruor was invented by James Watt as a part of tho (team-engine. In this instrument two heavy balls attaehed to the extremities of two rods, artieulated at their other end with a vertieal shaft, are made to rotate with it, reeeiving motion from the engine.

Centrifugal foree is thns produeed, wlueh overeomes gravity and forees the balls to separate and go up in a eirele to a distanee proportional to the veloeity of the maehine. The balls and rods are properly eouneeted with a throttle-valve in the steam-pipe, so that this is wide open when the veloeity is small, and entirely elosed the moment a veloeity is reaehed beyond whieh it is not desirable to go.

This instrument, depending on gravity for its aeeurate aetion, eaunot be nsed on board a ship, where the rolling and pitehing wonld throw it in an inelined position, in whieh tho weight of the balls wonld make it aet at the wrong time. Mr. Thomas Silver, of Philadelphia, obviates this fault by adding two more balls to equilibrate tho two first, and by substituting tho aetion of a spring to that of gravity. The fonr balls of eqnal size are attaehed to two rods working on a pin throngh tho eentre and throngh a small shaft.

A. movable sleeve on this shaft is eouneeted with the two rods half way between the balls and the eentre pin, and an adjnstable steel spring pnshes or pulls eonstantly on the movable sleeve, in the proper direetion to bring tho fonr balls elose to the shaft.

The movable sleeve is eouneeted with the valve. This instrument is of great serviee to paddle-wheel steamers, as in a heavy sea it freqnently happens that one wheel is entirely ont of water, when tho engine aequires an undne veloeity, teehnieally ealled raeing, whieh, suddeuly eheeked by the reimmersion of tho...
